Play Safe

Discovery Missions send your team to real streets, parks, and plazas. Murder Mystery and Party Mode nights happen around a table or in front of a TV. Everything here is plain common sense, and the first rule is the simplest: nothing in a game is worth getting hurt for.

This page is friendly guidance, not legal advice. It does not replace local laws, posted signs, the instructions of venue staff, or the rules you agree to before you play. When you buy a Discovery Mission, you read our Game Rules and Safety Acknowledgment first. Scheduled public events also ask each participant to sign a Participant Agreement.

Before you go

A little prep makes the whole Mission smoother.

  1. Step 1: Check the day

Look at the weather and at the opening hours for the places on your route. Dress for the conditions, wear comfortable shoes, and bring water, sun protection, and any medication or mobility aids you rely on.

  2. Step 2: Charge up

Your team plays from one phone, so start with a full battery. Phones can lose signal or run out of power, so agree on how your team would find each other if you got separated.

  3. Step 3: Plan for the light

Daylight makes stairs, curbs, and uneven ground easier to spot. If you play after dark, stay on well-lit streets and keep your team close.

  4. Step 4: Know who is playing

Some games are for adults only, and some include bar stops for guests who are 21 and over. Check the suggested age on the game before you book, and make sure everyone with you can take part.

On the street

These are the habits our rules ask every Discovery Mission player to follow.

  1. Step 1: Eyes up before you read

Stop in a safe place before you read a clue, type an answer, or film. Never use your phone while crossing a street, driving, or cycling.

  2. Step 2: Cross where it is safe

Use sidewalks and crosswalks, and cross only when the signal and the traffic allow. Never step into a road because the app, the map, or the clock makes it look faster.

  3. Step 3: Walk, do not run

Keep a steady pace. No sprinting across streets, no pushing through crowds, and no horseplay. No score is worth a fall.

  4. Step 4: Follow the signs and the people in charge

Obey local laws, posted signs, barriers, and closures. If police, security, or venue staff give you an instruction, follow it. Their rules come first on their property.

  5. Step 5: Travel the safe way

Get between stops on foot, by public transit, by rideshare or taxi, or in your own vehicle. Never drive while using the app, and never use a vehicle as part of a timed challenge.

Where you can go

Stay in places that are open to the public. No task is worth going somewhere you should not be.

  • Stay out of anything closed, fenced, private, or marked for staff only, including construction areas.
  • Go into a building only if a task sends you there, it is open to the public, and it is lawful to enter.
  • Do not climb fences, walls, statues, monuments, or railings. Do not cross train or transit tracks outside a proper crossing, and keep out of the water.
  • Treat places and people with respect. Do not move, mark, or damage property, and do not litter. Be polite to people who are not playing.
  • Ask before you photograph or film someone you do not know, and follow each place’s photo rules.
  • Leave other teams to their own game. Do not block, follow, or hurry them.

Stay with your team

  • Stick together. A team is one phone and a group of people who look out for each other.
  • Take turns holding the phone, so someone is always looking up.
  • Speak up. Anyone on the team can call a stop when something feels wrong.
  • Younger players stay with a responsible adult. The game and the app are not childcare.

Food, drinks, and weather

  • Buying something is optional unless the game page says otherwise, and tasks that involve a purchase are designed with a no-cost alternative.
  • Check prices, hours, allergens, and dietary needs yourself before you order. Each place runs its own menu.
  • Some Missions include bar stops. Those activities are for ages 21 and over, and the host sees a reminder before the game starts. In a Mission with only a few of them, you can skip those activities and play on.
  • If you drink, pace yourself and add water in between. Our rules ask every player to take part unimpaired, and nobody should ever drive while using the app.
  • Heat, cold, sun, and rain come with being outside. Drink water, rest when you are tired, and head indoors if the weather turns.

Kids and teens

Mission Masters is for players 13 and older, and some games are for adults only.

  1. Step 1: Ages 13 and older

We cannot create or keep an account for anyone under 13. No parent email is sent, and that account cannot play games. If a birth month or year was entered by mistake, a parent or guardian can email privacy@missionmasters.io.

    Read the Children’s Privacy Notice

  2. Step 2: Parent approval for teens

Players who are 13 to 17 need a parent or guardian to approve their account. We ask for a birth month and year only, never a full date of birth, and we email the parent an approval link. Teens can play Party Mode and the free Daily Challenges. Discovery Missions and Murder Mystery are for players 18 and older.

    See ages for every game

  3. Step 3: Younger players need a grown-up

A minor stays with a responsible adult. At scheduled public events, a parent or guardian signs the Participant Agreement for each minor, and the game and app are not childcare.

Your location

  1. Step 1: Why we ask

Discovery Missions use your phone’s location to confirm that you are at the starting point and to unlock tasks tied to places. Your information is handled under our Privacy Policy.

    Read the Privacy Policy

  2. Step 2: Location helps, it does not stop you

If your GPS drifts, your signal is weak, or location access is off, the app offers an I’m here button. Tap it when you are sure you are at the spot, and the game goes on.

  3. Step 3: You choose the permissions

The app works best with location and camera access turned on. You can change those permissions in your phone settings whenever you like.

Game nights at home

Party Mode and Murder Mystery are easy to run safely. A few small choices help.

  • Get-up-and-move rounds in Party Mode are your choice. At setup the host picks whether to include them, and Trivia Night games have none.
  • If you do get up and move, the host can choose challenges that need no props. Clear some floor space first.
  • Anyone can sit a round out. Tap Sit me out on your own screen whenever you need a break.
  • Clips from physical challenges stay private to the game. Only your team, the host, and a judge the host authorizes can see them, and they never go on the TV.
  • Every Party Mode question is office appropriate.
  • In Murder Mystery, only guests you invite can take a seat. Each guest signs in with the email address you invited.
  • Murder Mystery is a game of friendly bluffing. Everyone plays a character, so keep the accusations playful.
  • Personalized selfie photos and clips in Murder Mystery are an optional add-on, and every player opts in separately for each event.

If something goes wrong

  1. Step 1: In an emergency, call first

For immediate danger or a serious injury, move to safety and call your local emergency number (911 in the United States). Follow the instructions of first responders, then tell us.

  2. Step 2: Skip it, or ask for another way

If a task is closed, unsafe, or out of reach, skip it and use the in-app alternative if there is one. You can also contact us to ask for a task alternative or a reasonable accommodation.

    Contact us

  3. Step 3: Tell us what happened

Report any incident as soon as you can. Use the Contact page or email support@missionmasters.io, and include the name of your game, the time, and the place. If another player is a problem inside the app, use Report or block on a message, a photo, or a player in the lobby, or under Profile.
