Mission Masters works for friends, coworkers, and groups of different sizes. This page answers the practical questions: who is old enough, how many people can play, and what you need in hand. Each game page has the final details for that game.
Ages
Mission Masters is for players 13 and older. Discovery Missions and Murder Mystery are for adults, and a few Missions include activities for guests who are 21 and over.
Step 1: Accounts start at 13
We cannot create or keep an account for anyone under 13. When you sign in, we ask for your birth month and year, never your full date of birth, so we can follow children’s privacy laws.
Step 2: Teens need a parent or guardian
Players who are 13 to 17 need a parent or guardian to approve their account, and we email the parent an approval link. Once it is approved, teens can play the teen-safe games: Party Mode and the free Daily Challenges.
Step 3: Adults can play every game
Discovery Missions and Murder Mystery are for players 18 and older, and only adult accounts can host a game. When a team joins a Discovery Mission, the app asks the player to confirm they are 18 or older.
Step 4: Look for the number on the game
A game can show a suggested player age, such as 21+, on the Games page and on its own page. Before a 21 and over Mission starts, the host confirms that everyone on the team is 21 or older. A Mission with only a few 21 and over activities, such as going into a bar, lets you skip them and play on.
Discovery Missions
Teams explore real places with one phone per team. Discovery Missions are played in the Mission Masters app.
Step 1: Two teams are included
Every Discovery Mission includes two teams, so you can bring a rival crew at no extra cost. A team can be just one person, and a solo player plays as one team.
- Date Night
- Each couple shares one phone and one code.
Step 2: Need more teams?
A team pack adds two more teams to a Mission, and you can add up to two packs. Some annual passes include extra teams as well. Pricing shows what is available right now.
Step 3: One phone per team
Each team plays from one phone and has its own team code. Your game’s team setup shows how many people can play together around that phone. The number depends on the Mission.
Step 4: One player downloads the app
One player per team installs the app on an iPhone or Android phone and enters the team code. Nobody needs an account to join with a team code.
Murder Mystery
A night around the table with a culprit in the room. Murder Mystery players are 18 and older.
Step 1: Eight players are included
Every Murder Mystery includes eight players. Each of the eight suspect seats goes to a guest, and a seat without a guest is played by a character the app runs for you, so you do not need a full table.
Step 2: Room for up to 20
An optional player expansion adds up to twelve more players to one event, for a total of 20. Guests beyond the eight suspects get bonus roles. They still receive evidence and a vote, but they can never be the culprit.
Step 3: Guests join with an invitation
The host invites each guest by email. Guests accept the invitation, claim a character, and sign in with that same email address. The host can add more players right up until the game starts.
Step 4: Phones, browsers, or a big screen
Guests can play from a phone browser or the Mission Masters app. A TV or computer is optional: the host can put the clue board on a big screen, or you can play with just phones.
Party Mode
A game show for your living room. Teams buzz in from their phones, and the clue board goes on a TV or computer if you have one.
Step 1: Teams or individual players
The host chooses at setup: play as teams, or play individually with everyone playing for themselves. A team can be just one person. Challenges that need a full team are left out of an individual game.
Step 2: One phone per team
By default each team buzzes from a single phone, passed around however the team likes. The host can also let every player buzz from their own phone, and the first teammate to buzz answers for the team.
Step 3: How many teams?
Teams are created by the players who scan the game’s QR code, up to the number of team slots your game includes. You can start with one team and grow. For the full show, play with two or more teams: get-up-and-move challenges need at least two, and the SELL IT commercial round needs three or more.
Step 4: Latecomers are welcome
Once a game has started, a new team can still jump in between questions until two questions have been answered. After that, latecomers scan the code and join a team that is already playing.
Step 5: An adults-first age range
A new Party Mode game starts with an age range of 18 to 99, and each game can set its own range, for example for family play. The board only uses categories that fit the range.
Daily Challenges
Free games you can play any day. Trivia Board plays on the website and in the app. Speed Trivia, Marble Maze, and Slider Puzzle play in the app only.
- Trivia Board has a daily board, solo practice, and play against a friend.
- Playing a friend head to head? Each of you uses your own phone or browser, and your opponent needs a free account.
- Sharing one phone works too. Enter both names and pass the phone after every square.
- Teens with a parent-approved account can play Daily Challenges.
Phones and screens
- Mission Masters runs on iPhone and Android. Discovery Missions are played in the app.
- Party Mode and Murder Mystery players can join from a phone browser, and the app works too.
- Games with a WEB PLAY badge on the Games page can be played right in a browser.
- You do not need a TV. Party Mode and Murder Mystery shine on a big screen, but phones alone work.
- A big screen can be a smart TV, Chromecast, AirPlay, Vizio, Fire TV, Roku, or a laptop on an HDMI cable.
- Bring a signal. Games need an internet connection to sync progress and keep scores current, and Party Mode phones should share the same Wi-Fi so buzzing stays fair.
- The app works best with location and camera access turned on.
Accounts and joining
Whether you need an account depends on the game and on your role.
- Party Mode players need no app, no account, and no login. Scan the QR code or open your team link, type a name, and you are in.
- Murder Mystery guests sign in with the email address the host invited, then accept the invitation and claim a character.
- Discovery Mission teams get a team code. One player per team enters it in the Mission Masters app, with no account needed to join.
- The person who buys a game signs in, so the game lives in their account. Hosts can set up on the website or in the app.
